Minnesota Boating Safety Certification
Minnesota law requires many boat operators to have a valid Boater Education Certificate before operating certain motorboats. Beginning July 1, 2025, the requirement is being phased in by age, with additional age groups added each year until it applies to all operators born after June 30, 1987.
If you’re required to have a Boater Education Certificate, you must carry proof of certification while operating the boat and present it upon request by law enforcement.
Operators who are not required to carry a certificate may still operate the vessel without one, provided they meet all other Minnesota boating laws. We encourage all renters to complete a boater safety course to ensure a safe and enjoyable day on the water.
